The subreddit Accidental Renaissance swears by the fact that history repeats itself. It invites people to share photos that “inadvertently resemble a painting similar in composition, style, lighting, and/or subject to Renaissance-style art.” Let’s practice. Your friend is half asleep, his tongue is sticking out, and he is mumbling some things about mom’s spaghetti. What’s so special about the Renaissance? Well… think of it as the golden age for artistry, composition, lighting, perspective, techniques, and beauty. Ever heard of the Fibonacci sequence, Golden Ratio, chiaroscuro, sfumato, mannerism, and fresco? No, that’s not Italian, even though the home of the Renaissance is indeed the city of Florence in Italy. That’s where the great masters—Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Botticelli—lived and worked.
One of the first Renaissance geniuses is said to be Giotto. As the story goes, one day, a messenger from Pope Boniface VIII arrived at Giotto’s workshop to collect a sample of his work. “Sure,” said Giotto; and he laid down a sheet of paper, reached for a brush dipped in red paint, closed his arm to his side to make a sort of compass with it, and in one even sweep painted a perfect circle. “There you are,” he told the courier, handing it to him with a smile. The messenger came back to The Pope and showed him the drawing. The free-hand perfect circle is known as ‘Giotto’s O’ and stands as proof of the artist’s enviable talent and excellence.
