The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the UK’s design industry is without precedent and the consequences of cancelled contracts, enforced lockdown and sickness are likely to be felt for many months to come.
In an attempt to mitigate the effects of the virus on the country’s business, chancellor Rishi Sunak has put in place a number of financial support initiatives, including the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme and the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme.
But while the acknowledgement from the government has been welcomed, there have been criticisms. The chancellor’s initial government support only focused on employees; and when financial aid for the self-employed was introduced, personal service company owners were again excluded.
