If you've ever set foot into a thrift shop, you know what an uncharted territory it is. Treasure hunting gets a whole new meaning there.
And there’s one Instagram account that celebrates beyond weird findings from the land of second-hand. “Thrift Store Art” collects the trashiest art and design-themed objects that fall out of any normal category. From puffy “The A-Team” stickers to the backpack shrouded with Nicolas Cage’s face to the point that it resembles a pinkish egg, the stuff is both eccentric and an inspiration to hold on to the bold side of life.
163K Instagram followers must be loving the weird vibes, and even if the description of “The Best Art. Ever.” sounds like a tiny bit of an exaggeration, we forgive it. Take a look at the best artsy second-hand gems down below.

In the past decades, thrift store haunting has become a trendy thing to do, with millennials flocking to the second-hands to browse for unique and budget-friendly items. Thrift shops became popular in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis, when cash-short people opted for affordable wear. According to a report by IBISWorld, the size of the thrift store market is estimated at a whopping $10 billion.

But it’s not only the clothes that are on bargain shoppers’ radar. Those who have an affection for thrift stores are looking for quirky items, household objects, furniture, and even art. One of them is Rodney Parrot, a pro hunter of valuable thrift art, who has devoted his life to browsing the shelves, walls, and floors of consignment shops.
His main advice on how to get your hands on art gems in a thrift shop reads as follows: “First of all, you must have a great affection for thrift stores. If you are only looking for art, it is not worth the dust, mold, shabby buildings, and rough-edged culture.”

Very few of us get lucky in the thrift store hunting game. But one Indiana man was surely one of them! The guy spent $30 at a local thrift store on furniture and a painting to hide a hole in the wall. Some time later, he was playing a board game with friends when they came up with a card with the painting on the wall. Turns out, it was an original called “Magnolias on Gold Velvet Cloth” painted by Martin Johnson Heade. It was bought by The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston for $1.2 million.
