108 Times People Shared Their Unusual Secondhand Lamp Finds That Seriously Made Their Day Brighter

There’s a group called Weird Secondhand Finds That Just Need To Be Shared dedicated to some of the most "wat da heck" oddities found at thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, and wherever you go not to spend an arm and a leg on something that functions. If you just got here, check out our previous posts with their catches here, here, and here.

But this post is shinin’ bright like a diamond ‘cause we are talking lamps. Not just some basic pound store-grade sources of light that emit questionable levels of dimness, but proud secondhand catches that prove the hunter's mad thrifting skills.

From a super fancy Looney Tunes lamp to a honking goose lamp, these are some of the most illuminating finds people have shared in the group. In an unlikely match, interior design lovers and secondhand hunters unite, and the result is this miscellaneous compilation below.

#6 My Aunt Purchased This Goose Lamp At A Thrift Store Or Yard Sale Probably 20+ Years Ago As A Gag Gift

My aunt purchased this goose lamp at a thrift store or yard sale probably 20+ years ago as a gag gift. My parents loved it and proudly displayed it in their front window for many years, complete with a wardrobe of seasonal and holiday outfits. My mom’s friend stumbled on another goose lamp and gave it to them as well. So my parents eventually passed the original goose on to me to display in my own window. He now wears a sombrero that my friend bought for my cat (the cat didn’t like the sombrero as much as the goose lamp did). I thought my suburban neighborhood would hate the goose, but during quarantine, I have met many neighbors and they all love it! He’s on a timer. I used to have a WiFi lightbulb in there, but it was just out of good WiFi range and was flaky, so I switched back to an old school plug-in timer. I recently got new WiFi with an extra unit - maybe I should try again or get one of those LED bulbs that can change colors

#15 Floral Lamp

Yesterday someone posted their Amazing floral lamp find and I thought to myself, “Man how do people get so lucky?” Long story short, my grandmother had a pole light with lotus-like glass shades that hung in the corner of her apartment that I loved. After she died, I never knew what happened to that piece. For years I tried to find something equivalent, but it was either A) Way too Expensive or B)It sold before I got a chance to buy it. Well after drooling over the person’s lucky find, I continued to scroll through my feed and saw someone had just posted this beauty for sale! I commented and got it!! $40, a one hour drive (by my adoring hubby) later, the women who sold it to me told him someone offered her double right after she sold the lamp to me, “but she couldn’t do that to her (me) as she knew how much she loves (I loved) the piece.” No idea where I will put it, I’m 5’4” tall and it’s about a little over half the height of me, but I’m super excited and just had to share my find with you all!! The light has a 2,3 all 5 light mode and it’s so pretty! Post the other 2 pics I have in the comments! I love it!!

#18 My Absolute Favorite Secondhand Possession. The Brain Lamp

My mom picked this up at a yardsale in the 1970's. It somehow survived in our basement tv room through five kids, a few dogs, and a 500 mile move in the mid 1980"s. After my dad passed in 1997, my mom was downsizing and preparing to move again. In the garage sale pile was The Brain. Gasp! Thankfully I happened to be visiting, snatched it up and it once again made a 500 mile trip home with me. It has since survived an additional four moves, kids, dogs, and grandkids. Over the years I have looked for this lamp on different sites. I have never found a match

#31 When I Was A Little Girl, My Grandmas' Had One Of These Rain Lamps And I Was Absolutely Memorized By It. I Thought It Was The Most Beautiful Thing Hanging In Their Pepto-Bismol Pink Painted Living Room

When I was a little girl, my grandmas' had one of these rain lamps and I was absolutely memorized by it. I thought it was the most beautiful thing hanging in their Pepto-Bismol pink painted living room. Fast forward 18 years, my husband asks me what I want for Christmas. I pitched the idea of one of these not knowing they cost an arm and a leg. My sweet husband found one for me, it was in dire need of repair. The pump didn't work, it needed to be restrung, and it was filthy. He spent time after work for weeks fixing this up for me secretly at his parents house. Christmas morning I woke up to this gorgeous babe, working in her full glory. Majestic AF. My heart is so full Everytime I look at it.

#40 You Know, There's Not A Long Story To This Post. Some Of You Will Probably Be Grateful For That

You know, there's not a long story to this post. Some of you will probably be grateful for that.

But I traveled five hours (nearly 12 hours roundtrip after getting trapped in a freak hailstorm, getting lost/turned around, a full interstate shutdown), and a full one hour delay, dallying at the home of the kindest, sweetest little grandmother I've ever met (worth it).

With my best friend of more than a decade, I took a trip to grab this lovely lady lamp, a 1930s Art Deco piece that belonged to a kindly widow; it was her husband's favorite. I saw her on Marketplace, and my heart fluttered. Madeleine (name changed for privacy) invited us inside, settled us down in a pair of beautiful antique wingback chairs, and brought us glasses of cold lemonade with homemade syrup. She toured us around her beautiful home, with its arched doorways, French pocket doors, original leaded glass doorknobs and windows, and backyard patio oasis. She told us excitedly of her next great adventure -- a move with her children to a different state. Theyd break ground on the new build the following week. The trip was full of memories -- hers, and the new memories I made with my friend, as well as the old ones we reminisced over...

Naturally, when two longtime, might as well be sisters set off on a rescue mission for one's dream girl... well, we picked up her friend for a "song." We couldn't bear to leave the "charming" piece behind. We agreed to share custody, but for now, she's accompanying my "lady in the moon" on this leg of their travels.

They both light up my life, day and night, when I'm missing the other half of my heart the most.

#44 1st Post From A Long Time Lurker

My company buys vintage houses, rehabs them & resells them. We purchased from an estate, the home of a book collector. His brother the executor had taken most of the personal collection & some furniture had gone to family members. But they left behind a ton of great stuff. Our property manager took some photos when she was there to secure the property. I wish I had a bigger apartment because he had a burl wood roll top desk, a "fainting" couch & several other pieces but this lamp called my name. Normally, the only stuff that's left behind is 50 years of stuff that's only memorable to family. In the year I've worked, this is the 1st thing I've ever requested. I just love the way it looks with the original painting by my son. He put an led changeable bulb in for me

#45 This Amazing Lamp Was Made By My Dad In The Mid 1960s!

This amazing lamp was made by my dad in the mid 1960s!! He use to collect agates from the Yellowstone River near Terry MT. The winter river ices would tear up the riverbed leaving agates exposed. He would pick them and cut them and then set them in teardrop molds and pour resin over them. This is just one of the lamps he made

#48 This Is My Very Favorite Lamp In My House

This is my very favorite lamp in my house. My friend & I found this in a junk store years ago. It is made of white material & painted. When I found it there was about a million little white dings ( not deep but enough to remove the color) on it. I repainted just the little white spots. Now you would never know it wasn’t perfect. It goes perfectly with my collection of Brian Froud paintings. I usually keep a stuffed dragon sitting in the bottom left side of it. I keep looking for a good shade for it. The table it sits on top of are two huge stone horse heads with a glass top. They go together perfectly!

#56 This Lamp Is My Favorite Find!

So excited to be posting! I am a self-proclaimed trash panda. Since we moved to America I couldn't believe the things Americans threw away! From a young age you could find me picking up people's discarded treasures. Fast forward to when I was 23 living in Austin TX with my new husband (he enables my raccoon ways) our neighbor moved out and they brought in one of those giant trash boxes! This pineapple lamp was in there along with some other amazing treasures! I literally dove in and saved three boxes of perfect records (LPs) and some vases. This lamp is my favorite find! I think it's vintage, I have not been able to find anything like it. I heard that pineapples are great for guests rooms because they represent hospitality. My husband being in the military means many moves and military movers are notorious for breaking your stuff, this is one of the items we always carry with us and don't ship.

#61 I Purchased This Pair Of Unmarked Pink Lamps At A Garage Sale In Champaign, Illinois

I purchased this pair of unmarked PINK lamps at a garage sale in Champaign, Illinois. They measure approx. 27" in over-all height and I would guesstimate them to be mid century lamps. They have plaster chalkware type bases with fiberglass shades. When I first saw them, my initial thought was they were cheap and ugly enough that I could probably flip them for a nice profit. Now, after having them around the house for a bit, I have to admit that they are kind of growing on me, lol I think it's the shades

#62 Bought This Lamp From Gw In Savannah

Bought this lamp from GW in Savannah, GA for $10 because I thought it had good bones. (Mom said the joke was on me, that it was hideous!) During the beginning of the Covid quarantine, I decided to channel my maternal grandmother ("Mother") and disassemble, replace the 3 terminal socket, and add my own twist to it: LED lights in the body of the lamp! Tonight, I found the perfect place for it... On Mother's writing desk, which was one of her prized possessions (and bought at a yard sale!), and is now my bedroom

#73 I Have Been Waiting To Post This, To Make Sure Everything Worked Out. It Did – So Here Is My Very Happy Story

I have been waiting to post this, to make sure everything worked out. It did – so here is my very happy story.

I can say it all started when I was but a wee babe – sitting on my mother’s lap, under the glow of an orange Lucite globe with added plastic “stained glass” accents. That is where I learned to feel safe, to love books and to be loved.

Then we moved, and somehow that lovely item did not come with us. As soon as I could, I started looking for a replacement.

Many years later, I was engaged to my longtime boyfriend, living and working in and around Toledo, OH. I went to a yard sale – and there IT was! Not at all the same as my orange memory, but giant, round, Lucite – in this case, a lamp of many colors. I grabbed it up immediately. I carried it around with me and would not let it go. When I asked how much, I could NOT hide my adoration for this magical item, I was willing in my head to pay a little bit…. The former owner could not believe her luck in finding, “anyone who could like THAT thing!” and said it was mine for 25. No, not dollars – cents, 25 cents. I think we were both absolutely thrilled.

I brought my prize home, only to be met with an incredulous stare and a “that’s not getting hung up!” I was devastated. He finally relented after many weeks and allowed it in the guest bedroom – unplugged.

Flash forward – we were engaged, then married, I entered graduate school and we moved around a lot…. And still, my lovely lamp was never hung up in a public location. Most times it was relegated to sitting un-shining in a dusty box, usually in a closet. I would not give it up – no matter how many times we moved, or he asked to de-clutter. I had dreams for this beauty.

Then one day – that was all over. I moved out on my own and brought out many things that had been put away or covered up. My lamp was lifted to a place of honor over my own bed.

In an amazing day of serendipity a little while later. I was junk shopping at a store in an older portion of Toledo (Collingwood Collectables, if I remember correctly). I walked in and saw, not a single orb of amazingness – but a trifecta shaped more like a flower than an ordinary floor lamp. I again immediately grabbed it and would not let go. It had just arrived and had not even been priced. They called the owner and in a sense of deja-vu, they again seemed to think I was insane to want “that hideous thing.” If I promised to walk it out to my car immediately It could be mine for $5. I practically ran out with my new prize.

Now dubbed the “Plamp” (plant + lamp) I placed it in my living room. Both lamps quickly became a litmus test for friends and dating prospects, did they like them, pretend to like them or think I was nuts for loving them.

Flash forward again. I met a boy. A cute boy. A boy I liked very much. We had met a few years earlier and had been long-distance friends (VA for him and OH for me), but now we were both single. I invited him to visit me, he said yes. He did visit and do you know what he loved? Yes, it was my lovely, lovely lamps. He immediately asked where to get one, he was not pretending to just like it, he liked them as much as I did.

We finally started dating and when he had a birthday coming – you bet your sweet bippy I bought him a lovely orb of his own. In his favorite color – orange. He put his up above his bed.

A few years later we married, I moved to Virginia, we unpacked my sweet babies and placed mine next to his, on my side of the bed and the other on full display in our living room.

I thought we were complete.

But wait, there’s more!! I was trying to find an example of an orb like mine to show a friend. It’s an interesting internet search and does not often come up with great results. When lo and behold – what do I see before my late-night browsing eyes – not just a spun Lucite spaghetti lamp – but the trifecta of amazingness that is the PLAMP! “For pick-up only, Allen, MI.” a 10-hr drive away from our current home. I sighed and let it go mentally but joked about the long-lost twin in MI to my husband. His immediate response was, “Let’s go get it.”

Negotiations took place, and a few weeks later we piled ourselves and our two kids into the family road-trip mobile and headed off to Hog Creek Antiques in the Antique Capitol of Allen Michigan (who knew?). It was not quite the same experience as previous ones had been – no one begged me to leave with it and as a Valentine’s Day/almost 3rd (or is it 12 year)* anniversary gift I do not know what was paid. It was ever so carefully packed, and we brought it home to be part of our family.

Now our twin plamps bookend our couch and he twin orbs bookend our bed. And just like my early childhood memories, I sit under their glow with my children where we teach them they are safe, to love books and to know they are very loved by their weirdling parents.

* Confusion over the years – we will celebrate our 3rd actual anniversary as we leapt into our marriage on leap day, Feb 29th, 12 years ago.

#80 I Had An Amazing Resale Shop Day. Among Other Things I Found This 1950’s Siamese Cat TV Lamp In Perfect Condition For The Crazy Price Of $1.00

I had an amazing resale shop day. Among other things I found this 1950’s Siamese cat TV lamp in perfect condition for the crazy price of $1.00. It was outside among a pile of junk and sad weathered and water damaged items that were probably destined for a dump soon. Poor thing was quite dirty but shined up beautifully with not a single crack or chip. It will need a new wired cord, but that is a simple fix. The green cats eye marbles for eyes are original and are lit from the back of the eye socket. For those not familiar with TV lamps, back when televisions were first becoming popular in homes there was the thought that watching TV in a dark room would be bad for your eyes. So people put these ceramic figurine lamps on top of their televisions that cast light out the back side to softly illuminate the wall behind the TV, thus relieving eye strain.

#85 My Pearl Lamp. I Love This Thing So Much

A few years ago I seen a Facebook post by a person cleaning out a house they were moving into and the furniture left behind by the previous owner was free to whoever comes and picks it up. This lamp was in the posts picture along with the other items. I had to have it so rushed to go get it. The lamp now sits among my shell and fossil collection and looks beautiful.

It still works and has a key (looks like one anyway) as its switch. I am not sure of its value or history but its priceless to me.

#86 I Went For A Visit To My Parents Place Recently, And My Mom Had A Box Of My Grandma's Things For Me

I went for a visit to my parents place recently, and my Mom had a box of my Grandma's things for me; my Grandma passed away about 5 years ago. I had forgotten my Mom had asked if I'd wanted the first lamp, and I was so excited to share it here. She said Grandma really loved it and now I'm happy to proudly display it in my Craft Room. I was also delightfully surprised to find a tiffany stained glass kitty lamp in the box as well! It's in need of some repairs, which luckily, I have the skills to do  This group has made me cherish my second hand items so much more, knowing that there are others out there who know just how special they can be. I hope you enjoy my wonderful lamps weirdlings!

#87 Probably My Favorite Thing In My House!

Spotted in an antique store in Monroe, MI. Fell in love and sent a pic to my hubby but didn’t buy it.

Fast forward a couple months later, we come back from a weekend getaway and it’s hanging in my foyer!

He went back, scoured the huge antique mall until he found it, hid it from me, and had a friend come install it while we were gone.

Probably my favorite thing in my house!

#92 I've Been Dying For A Bedside Table Light And Nothing Really Made Me Happy Until Yesterday! Everyone Meet Turkey, The Stained Glass Peacock Lamp! My Fiance Thought It Was A Turkey, Hence Its Name

I've been dying for a bedside table light and nothing really made me happy until yesterday! Everyone meet Turkey, the stained glass peacock lamp! My fiance thought it was a turkey, hence its name.

Edit to add: I'm so glad y'all like it as much as I do! I am aware it's a peacock, not a turkey. I will still be marrying my fiance despite him thinking it's a turkey lol I'll let this one time slide. A vet's husband can't be misidentifying bird species!

Also, it may not be the weirdest find, but I was looking for a lamp and came home with a peacock so it's out there for me lol oh and it's 'tiffany style' not a true Tiffany lamp. And yes there's a bulb out pointing towards the neck and head, thank you for having me expect it closer!

Also, let me use this time to say my favorite line from anchorman:

I LOVE LAMP

#97 I'm Inheriting This From My Grandma Because She Wants More Room In Her Sunroom And It's Too Big For Her To Mess With Anymore

I'm inheriting this from my grandma because she wants more room in her sunroom and it's too big for her to mess with anymore. Her and my grandpa that passed the year before I was born bought it in the late 70s from a guy at the Puyallup Fair in Washington. She wants to keep it in the family and I'm the only grandkid that is interested in family heirlooms plus I collect mushrooms which was inspired by these lamps growing up. I just think they're so unique and beautiful. Her and my dad have around half a dozen of them in different designs and sizes between the two of them. Im so happy to finally have one of my own and to always have a part of my grandparents. The missing lampshade is somewhere in a box and I have to take this whole giant, heavy, fragile lamp somewhere to get rewired and see if I can get the pond to work which I'm not looking forward to but it'll be worth it.

#98 Hopping On The Stained Glass Animal Lamp Bandwagon!!

Hopping on the Stained Glass Animal Lamp bandwagon!! She’s beautiful and not only is she a cow with a hat, her head BOBBLES. I found it on FaceBook Marketplace, but the previous owner was two states away. Luckily they were nice enough to ship her to me! She unfortunately came with a few small cracks/chips, but is otherwise in excellent shape. Edit: I knew she was gonna get a lot of love here! I’m definitely reading through and appreciating how much you all enjoy her as much as I do. I’m so glad we’re all able to share weird, unique stuff here!!

#107 Hi Guys! Long-Time Lurker Here! I Love Thrifting And Have A Serious Love Of Lamps!

Hi guys! Long-time lurker here! I love thrifting and have a serious love of lamps! So, naturally when I came across this lamp for ¥1000 ($10), I had to have it. I have no idea what it is made out of and I have never seen anything like it! I found it in a little hole-in-the-wall antique shop while we were stationed in Yokosuka, Japan! I figured if anyone would know anything about it, it would be my fellow weirdlings! When it’s not lit, it isn’t much to look at, but when you plug it in, it’s beautiful! I hope you guys like it as much as I do!
