Nobody said shopping is easy. It’s a mission we undertake on a weekly basis, and no one dares to question it. Some people indeed enjoy it much more than others, happily browsing through the ice cream aisle and pushing that trolley with splendid grace.

For many dads, husbands, boyfriends, and brothers, though, it’s not that simple. The supermarket feels like a maze and the grocery list is reminiscent of the poem you tried to learn by heart at school, but mercilessly failed.

Recently, the previous gender gap in grocery shopping has narrowed with more and more men hitting up the supermarkets to “get something for dinner on your way home.” The Grocery Shopper Impact MegaStudy showed that women now account for about 51 percent of shoppers, and men make up the remaining 49 percent.

But even though men are equal shoppers to women, in many households, women still tend to be the ones to make the shopping decisions. David W. Stewart, the Robert E. Brooker Professor of Marketing at the Marshall School of Business of the University of Southern California, told WebMd that “Without a list, men get lost in today's fast-paced supermarkets.”

This is because men are frequently following the instructions of the female in the household. “Traditionally, the woman was the decision maker and shopper. Now the female is still the primary decision maker, but the shopping is more often shared by two individuals," he said.

Stewart also noted that men tend to go after specific grocery items, while women prefer to browse the items. "But it is not that males are more decisive. They are basically following orders," he concluded.

Often, though, the shopping lists may get lost in the midst of big red "discount" displays, to which many of us are vulnerable. To make sure you’re really getting something that you need, make sure you stick to your plan and try to have a clear vision of what you’re going to cook or eat. Value items are not bad per se, but opt for the product in the category you actually need.
