Tako furniture collection by Naoto Fukasawa for Maruni

Tako furniture collection by Naoto Fukasawa for Maruni

Dezeen Showroom: the Tako furniture collection, designed for Japanese brand Maruni by its longtime art director Naoto Fukasawa, includes a dining table and chair with legs resembling the sinuous silhouette of tentacles.

Named after the Japanese word for octopus, the range features an armchair with a curved backrest and a matching dining table perched on gently sloping supports.

The furniture pieces are variously constructed from solid walnut or pale oak wood. Rather than bending the wood, the curved, organic form of the table and chair is achieved by assembling pieces of wood that have been CNC milled into shape.

Naoto Fukasawa designed the Tako furniture collection for Maruni

"I wanted to implement a three-dimensional, free-form curve into a mass-producible wooden chair, but not by using the traditional wood bending techniques," said Fukasawa.

"This chair can showcase the shape, which was earlier only possible by handcrafting it piece by piece, in solid wood."

The Tako collection forms part of Maruni's wider 2020 collection, which also includes a wooden chair and coffee table set by English designer Jasper Morrison, called Fugu after the Japanese word for blowfish.
